Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Review

The Disgaea franchise returns in an all new strategic, epic adventure. Making its Playstation 4 console debut, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, brings a whole new story along with hilarious characters and a  brand new battle system.

In Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, you play as Killia and your main goal is to take down the mighty Overlord, “Void Dark.” Void Dark desires to enslave the numerous Netherworlds, and Killia must put a stop to Void Dark’s efforts. Throughout the comedic  and well-written story, I enjoyed the characters and story far more than any other previous Disgaea game. It also has a lengthy and satisfying story too.

There is a new battle system for In Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance called “Alliance Attack.” While battling, a player can use these attacks with main characters such as Killia, Seraphina, and Red Magnus. It is a nice gameplay mechanic to have because your relationship with your teammates influences your attacks.

Another gameplay feature that I enjoyed was while in battle, once one or more of my allies had either fallen to despair, I was able to become super-empowered and do more damage than normal to the enemy. This ability to become empowered with extra bonus stats happens when you are low on health too. NIS America calls it “Revenge Mode” and it is amazing.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance also harnesses the power of the Playstation 4 by allowing a load of enemies on the screen at once and allows for over thousands of damage points from attacks. There are also multiple ways to defeat your opponents which makes the game ridiculously fun.

Aside from amazingly story and combat, the game also introduces you to a multitude of side missions, items, equipment and skills. While back at your base, exploring the skills merchant allows you to add new skills to your character. You may also upgrade or degrade skills too.

The side missions allow for new items, abilities, and equipment to be found. These side missions are a good way to level up and earn some cold hard HL (the money in the game). I especially liked the way you can take items abilities and apply them to another item such as a sword or a piece of armor.

Players can also find the healing part of the main area a lot of fun to mess around with because you are rewarded with bonus items once you have healed so much. One final noteworthy mention from the main hub of the game is the ability to hire over from 40 different races and job types. This allows a player to create remarkable and huge armies for the battlefield. Players also should not forget that you can throw your Prinnies towards the enemy to do SUPER DAMAGE.

Finally, the graphics in Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance look astonishing when in comparison to the other consoles that the franchise appeared on before. I really thought the anime-styled scenes were over-the-top.

There are some minor details that could be done to make this a perfect game such as a leveling tree, higher quality side missions, and better environmental items (heck, you could even throw in some more exploding items). Also, sometimes in the main world, you have to talk to a bunch of Prinnies and other random characters on screen in order to get to a new area and progress through the story. Talking to these characters should not be removed from the game, but I think they should let you progress through the story without having to go around and talk to these characters. Let the players decide if they want to do this.

Overall, Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance has one of the best stories out of all the Disgaea games in the franchise, a great battling system, and good looking graphics. With some minor improvements, the game could be even better.

9/10 – Let the Prinnies and the power of the Playstation 4 guide your path!

The Best Strategy Role-Playing Game the Playstation 4 had ever seen!
