Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & the Monster Seal | R3DPlaystation Review

By: Nate

There is and always will be controversy in the gaming industry. One of the best games in the Dungeon Crawling Role-Playing Games genre has just been released for North America and Europe. This game is called Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & the Monster Seal. It is a first person dungeon crawler and one lengthy, difficult experience. The game was bashed about by fans for Atlus censoring only four images throughout the entire game. This should not be as big of deal as what some people are making it out to be. Are you buying a game for over-sexualized girls or for the gameplay and story?

When I first saw that this a first person, dungeon crawler game, I reminded myself of Demon Gaze which was one of the worst gaming experiences I ever had. Dungeon Travelers 2 on the other hand, was much more enjoyable. It is a game that you should not skip.

Dungeon Travelers 2 takes place in the kingdom of Romulea and it is currently in a state of peril. Monsters have started showing up everywhere in the world and started revolting against humanity. As a player, you take control of Fried, an adventurer from the Royal Library who is sent out to stop the monsters. This sets up the main plot of Dungeon Travelers 2.

The game has an extensive group of ladies that can be used in battle. During his travels, Fried will come across 16 different girls that can join his party. As players traverse these dungeons, they will come across ordinary monsters and then more powerful mutant girls, who Fried must seal away inside his magical Sealbook. The story in this game is lengthy and Atlus has promised 80 hours of gameplay and so far, I am coming across that number pretty easily with grinding, dialogue, and all the different customizations that is included this game.

DT2 (11)

Dungeon Travelers 2’s gameplay is tough and straight from the beginning, if you are not careful, you will die. The game features a first person perspective and you travel through the dungeons with the d-pad. During combat you will be introduced to a turn-based system where your characters and the enemies take turns attacking one another.

At the beginning, you will start off with only 2 characters to use, Alisia and Melvy. Eventually, players will be able to grow up to a 5 character party and have to decide which girls will fight and which ones will have to take a seat on the bench.

DT2 (12)

There are 5 main classes that each of your unique characters will be classified under in the game and there are a number of ways to level them up. After a character is leveled up to 15 they can be specialized in 2-3 subclasses, and at level 30, your character can choose to be advanced in 3-4 subclasses.

A distinctive feature that Aquaplus (game developer) put into the game is the ability to reset your points. So say that you don’t like the way you distributed your points and leveled up your characters’ abilities. You can reset all of that and redistributed the points anyway that you like.

DT2 (2)

Enemies are often very difficult in this game and you must grind in order to get by most of the bosses. During the battle, characters will have a normal attack, skills, defend, and items. Another great tip for anyone looking at playing this game is to reorganize the positions of your group. Some characters will take more damage than others. To counter this, place some characters in the back row behind others.

Not only can you level characters, but you may also create Sealbooks and identify items too. There are two different sealbooks, one is from defeating 9 or more of certain monsters and the other one is from defeating a powerful, mutant girl. When you create a Sealbook, you also can look up the stats and weaknesses of that enemy.

Finding and identifying new weapons and armor inside of each dungeon is highly important. These can add more attack and defensive stats to your character. Some even have special abilities such as letting your character heal after each turn or being able to escape more easily. If you don’t find your current or identified weapons and armor useful anymore, you can simply sell them and buy goodies in the shop.

While all these fighting and creation features are cool, the dungeons are extremely dangerous. After a certain point in the game, there will be traps. A trap could be as simple as drop to a basement or as deceiving as invisible walls. A player is going to want to utilize the 99 save slots that are available. There are 999 items that can be stored too.

The graphics in this game for each and every character look great. It has an amazing anime style and dialogues are quite enjoyable to watch. Sometimes characters will even encounter two additional characters along their travel. These characters will sometimes give out helpful hints.

Although the dialogue characters look great, the background environments and caves look terrible. This should not be a huge gripe for players, but it is something to take note of. The game is entirely spoken in Japanese, which is fantastic because the voice actors sound good. English subtitles are there to help guide you in your journey.

DT2 (3)

Here is the big detail that you all been waiting for. After beating or finding certain girls/mutants, they’ll appear in an over-sexualized state. This didn’t need to be in the game, but I don’t see the harm in it either. If it helps some people to get through a game easier because they get to see some partially nude girls, then leave in there for them. There were only 4 of these pictures that had to be censored in order to keep the game under a M for Mature rating.

Overall, Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & the Monster Seal is a fantastic first-person, Dungeon Crawling, Role-Playing Game adventure. The game is tough as nails until you start to grind and battles are so much fun in its turn-based system. The story is pretty typical, but has some fun moments here and there. The graphics are a hit and miss. With its unique classes and Sealbook system, this game is one of the best dungeon crawlers on the Vita and Playstation TV.

8/10 – If you love dungeon crawelers, this is a must have.
